2016 BMW 6 SERIES PREVIEW

BMW is a name for luxury, for performance and above all – for quality. For generations, they have been peppering Edmonton’s streets with high quality vehicles that people love to drive, all in the name of delivering the ultimate driving experience. To this end, the 2016 BMW 6-Series in Edmonton does not disappoint. It is a high-class, outperforming luxury sedan with a sharp and sporty personality.

BMW purists will notice the subtle changes to the 6-Series for this midterm facelift, but such subtleties will likely be lost to the rest of us. All we see is a gorgeous car with intuitive dynamics, though the sport-infused retouches are worth taking a look at.

It is a demonstration of BMW’s dedication to their product that they are willing to tweak it mid-cycle, with such intricate refinements as a restyled lower front air intake, redesigned front grille with only nine blades versus the ten in previous years and restyled LED head and taillights. The sport exhaust is now a standard across the lineup, giving off a deeply satisfying growl with every touch of the gas pedal. The M Sport package itself has been updated with adaptive LED headlights and the side indicator lights have migrated from the front fenders up to the mirrors. Completely new for 2016 is a black accent package that gives the new 6-series a smoldering personality by replacing all of the exterior chrome with black trim.

The 2016 6-Series has a chiseled body with a forward-leaning stance. Its sleek physicality and curved hood give way to BMW’s signature emblem flanked on either side by a kidney-shaped grille. Its aggressive exterior preludes the comfortable solitude of the 6-Series’ interior. Its wide cockpit and supportive seats outfitted in high-quality Dakota or Nappa leather in a comprehensive selection of colors offer a sense of richness to the 6-series’ cabin. Piano black, white gloss and fine wood trims are offset by brushed metal accents for a clean and classy look. The dashboard is busy, but in the way that organized chaos is, with all of the controls carefully laid out and within arm’s reach of the driver.

AS ATTRACTIVE AS THE NEW 6 SERIES IS, IT IS ALSO FUNCTIONAL

The driver’s seat and steering wheel both adjust to make sure you are completely comfortable taking control, both front seats are heated and ventilated and a heated steering wheel is a standard feature on all models. The rear-view mirror is auto-dimming, so that you won’t be blinded at night when the driver following you is too dim to turn down his high-beams. An electric rear sunshade can be installed for an added fee, as well as a ski bag that comes through the center armrest for those avid mountaineers looking to check out the new heated ski lifts popping up around Banff.

Being on the cutting edge of technology isn’t an easy feat with today’s competition, but the 2016 6-Series keeps you completely connected. BMW’s own Connected Drive, operated intuitively by the iDrive boasts such features as navigation with advanced real-time traffic updates, BMW online, internet and apps, automatic climate control to keep your cabin at the perfect temperature and improved teleservices. Every 6-Series is also equipped with an automatic start/stop feature that cuts your engine when you’re stuck in traffic and then starts it up again once you take your foot off the brake. For added peace of mind while on the road, the 6-Series is packed with technology-based safety features as well. Included amongst these are Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning and Collision Warning controls to prevent and mitigate incidents as much as possible. Every 6-Series is equipped with a rear-view backup camera and you can add BMW’s innovative Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection at an added cost for extra protection to you and your surroundings during nocturnal drives.

THREE BODY STYLES

Being hailed as a luxury performance car, you can expect to get a decent amount of power out of the 2016 6-Series. Coming in three body styles – a coupe, a convertible, or a Gran Coupe, and two engine sizes gives you plenty of configurations to work with. Both equipped with a twin turbo, the 6-Series can be outfitted with either a 315 horsepower 3.0-liter inline 6 engine or a slightly stronger 4.4-liter V-8 that gives off 445 horsepower. Both engines are paired with a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission and have the option of either a rear-wheel drive or all-wheel xDrive powertrain, the same system that equips BMW’s equally high-end 5-Series and 7-Series sedans. The 6-Series’ V8 option is the same engine that powers BMW’s M6 performance racer, guaranteeing a responsive acceleration and impressive growl worthy of a sports car.

The 2016 BMW 6-Series embodies the spirit of an elegant luxury car, outfitted with a modern fashion sense. Resting on a capable chassis and offering up intuitive driving dynamics, it is a more than capable high-performance vehicle with effortless handling and an entertainingly fast personality. Its sport automatic transmission with integrated paddle shifters puts you completely in control of your adventure. With a BMW, you can’t be disappointed. Take one for a drive and see for yourself what sheer driving pleasure entails.
