2016 BMW X1 REVIEW
Thought-provoking design meets unprecedented performance under the BMW name. BMWs, from their sedans to their SUVs are known for breaking records, and for breaking hearts – the hearts of the competition, that is, and it isn’t too hard to see why. Take, for example, the 2016 BMW X1. BMW has outdone itself by masterfully taking all of the meticulously designed elements of their lavish family sedans and expanding them into a perfectly balanced small-sized SUV. Whether you are looking to tackle long road trips or just in the market for a versatile vehicle to get you around Edmonton’s streets, the new X1 is equipped to handle all of your needs.
The intuitive design of the X1’s interior highlights both its unbeatable comfort and outstanding functionality. After a complete redesign, the 2016 model features not only a roomier cabin but nicer materials as well. Sinking into the heated driver’s seat felt more like a luxury spa experience. The ergonomically designed seat and logical control placement combined with aesthetically pleasing color combinations would put anyone at ease. Back seat space is well-accommodating to children and adults alike, so nobody has to deal with a cramped environment. Finally, the rear cargo, accessible through a hands-free power liftgate offer plenty of storage, including an in-floor compartment.
The new BMW X1 is based on the mini platform, which accounts for its more attractive stance. It looks more adventure-ready than last year’s model, which can be attributed to a shorter hood and aggressive slit head and tail-lights. Chiseled curves follow the BMW X1’s body line and give the impression of speed, a thirst for exploration. Its high roofline not only provides more space inside the cabin, but it also helps to give the 2016 BMW X1 a beefy posture. It is still the younger sibling to the BMW X5, but it is definitely keeping up better in the playground.
With the 2016’s new design comes a few new additions that amp up the convenience factor of the BMW X1. The new BMW X1 is now equipped with a futuristic head-up display that is projected onto the bottom of your windshield in front of you. This display lets you know how fast you’re going, what the current speed limit is and it even displays navigation directions. The navigation system itself is user-friendly and easy to follow, with the voice feature being exceptionally intuitive. The concierge service is easy to access, and the operator that I spoke to was polite and very understanding when I accidently activated the feature. All of this is controlled by the vehicle’s Connected Drive and easily operable by the iDrive located next to the SUV’s shifter.

Safety features include a standard rearview camera, frontal collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, front and rear parking sensors and even an automated parallel parking system. Being equipped with BMW’s own xDrive all-wheel drive system, you are ready to go anywhere year-round.
The 2016 BMW X1 in Edmonton is an impressively responsive machine that offers up a comfortable ride closer in feel to its larger SUV counterparts than to a car, as with past X1 models. Despite there not being a 6-cylinder option for this year’s model, the twin turbo inline 4 in the new BMW X1 definitely covers the loss – it may be small, but it is mighty, and the sport mode is more than happy to showcase the X1’s power. Top that off with BMW’s eco-friendly initiatives, you are left with a well-performing luxury crossover that won’t leave you broke at the pumps. Check out the completely redesigned X1, it’s the vehicle that you have been holding out for.
