2016 BMW X4 PREVIEW
BMW is a name that resonates luxury and comfort. Their sleek and sporty SUV and crossover models have especially been garnering attention on Edmonton’s busy streets, being an economy that relies on versatile, multi-function vehicles. Being a classy and comfortable crossover with a functional purpose but that also craves adventure, the 2016 BMW X4 is the answer to Edmonton’s need for a powerhouse vehicle that can also rule city streets. The all-new X4 is an impressive SUV that exudes style and is sure to take the entire market by storm.
COMPLETELY NEW DESIGN
The 2016 X4 borrows from the design of the previously available X3 in terms of wheelbase, powertrain, hood and dashboard design. That aside, it is a brand new vehicle. It is an SUV that sits lower to the ground than most, and has a wider stance. Its body style has a streamlined designed more reminiscent of a coupe than the boxy frames of its competition. A panoramic view reveals BMW’s signature kidney grille centered by two aggressive slit headlights and crowned with their world-renowned emblem: a projection of sophisticated substance. Follow the curved hood line that blends seamlessly with the X4’s windshield and sleek, wind-swept roofline. This is where the X4 distinguishes itself from the X3. The boxy downslope of the X3’s rear roofline is replaced by a fastback style that completely redefines its stance. Not an X3 but not quite the larger-version X6, the 2016 X4 stands alone amongst its peers and represents BMW’s first foray into the dynamic world of coupe-like crossovers.
Working off of the same powertrain of its X3 predecessor, the 2016 BMW X4 is offered with two engine choices, a turbocharged 4 cylinder in the 28i model that produces 240 horsepower or an equally turbocharged 6 cylinder in the 35i that puts out an impressive 300 horsepower. Both of these engines have been paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s unique xDrive all-wheel drive system. With a 40:60 front to rear split that can send up to 100% of its power to whichever end requires more traction, the xDrive system is performance based, not a rugged off-road set-up. This is evident in how well the X4’s entry-level 28i impresses at the track, sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds. The 35i comes in a little better, requiring only 5.2 seconds to hit the 60 mph mark.
All of this power though, doesn’t sell its soul in the price of fuel economy. The 28i earns an EPA estimated 20/28/23 city/highway/combined miles per gallon fuel economy. The 35i nearly matched that with an estimated 19/27/22 city/highway/combined miles per gallon. BMW’s innovative stop-start function greatly helps those figures by shutting off the engine of the X4 when you’re stopped in order to save fuel.

Lending to the X4’s versatility are a plethora of entertainment and convenience features. In true Bimmer spirit, the 2016 BMW X4 in Edmonton is the embodiment of sport luxury. Its closest competition is the Range Rover Evoque, in terms of price and similar styling. However, it still lags behind the X4’s performance and refined handling. The 2016 X4’s steering responses are swift, and the ride itself feels taut and stable, even at highway speeds. Its driving dynamics are simply incredible, with its Dynamic Damper control completely eliminating body roll. Its braking is firm without jerking you to and fro in your seat, absolutely incredible for an SUV. BMW’s Driving Dynamics Control allows you to select between several different driving attitudes to fit your needs. For example, the environment-conscious driver might decide to use the Eco Pro setting, which cuts down on pollution output as well as fuel consumption.
Rumors are afloat that the 2016 X4 will come with an M version, the only major upgrade from the 2015 model and ensuring its edge over the competition. The X4 is athletic. It is agile. It is a prize fighter, proudly stepping into the ring and ready to take on anything that you can throw at it. On top of its sharp handling, it has a unique design that will appeal to niche buyers with exceptional tastes looking to step out of the box and stand out in the crowd. Be brave in the face of diversity, let your personality shine through and come see the vehicle that your soul has been longing for.
