BMW has a wide and expansive vehicle selection, with numbers and letters (both capitalized and in lowercase) often put together, but what do they all mean? There’s a method to the madness in how BMW names their vehicles, classifying them with specific signatures so you can easily recognize and understand what makes up a vehicle from its naming convention. Read on from us at Edmonton BMW, your premier BMW Edmonton dealer, and learn about how BMW names their vehicles!
BMW Model Naming Conventions
Whether through sedans, SUVs or performances models, as you move your way higher up the number designations, the more luxurious a vehicle becomes. The BMW Series models run from 2 through 8, covering both sport cars and luxury sedans. All the even number series models (2, 4, 6, 8) represent the sportier options, while the odd numbers (1, 3, 5) represent more traditional sedan models. “X” models are the SUV BMW models, “Z” is for BMW roadsters, “M” for any BMW performance variation and “i” are for plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles. When you have as many vehicles as BMW does, this naming separation helps drivers easily spot what a vehicle is and what it can do, just from the name!
BMW Numbering and Lettering Designations
Now that we have the general vehicle model names established and where they come from, let’s take a look at the modifying number and letters after some BMW vehicles. Any number represented after the series (ie. BMW X3 xDrive 30i) makes up the power of the vehicle (the higher the better), while the lowercase letter represents either a gas, diesel or hybrid vehicle type. For example gas = i, diesel = d, economy = e and hatchback = t. Furthermore, xDrive or sDrive might be listed on a vehicle name, this refers to whether it is a 4-wheel or 2-wheel drive, respectively. All this ensures there’s a BMW for you, one that is as luxurious and capable as needed.
