Wireless charging is one of the most convenient ways to charge your mobile devices (and even your BMW Display Key!). With wireless charging now standard on the majority of new smartphones, and with most chargers capable of fast charging, BMW has taken the initiative on being one of the first auto manufacturers to incorporate this incredibly convenient technology since 2015.
There are three different types of wireless charging systems available for BMW models, so take a look below to see which one your vehicle has and how to use it.
How Do I Know If My BMW Has Wireless Charging?
Compatible models will display the wireless charging symbol on the tray with an additional battery symbol inside, and there will also be an LED indicator light to go with it as well. If your wireless charging tray does not have these indicators visible, this means you can only wirelessly charge your BMW Display Key on the tray.
Otherwise, there are three different types of wireless charging trays from BMW, with instructions on how to use them below:
1. Standard Charging Tray Under Your Infotainment System
All you have to do is simply place your compatible mobile device screen-up onto the wireless charger, while waiting for the LED light to turn blue. It’s that simple! Depending on the vehicle, the charging status of your device will be shown on the BMW iDrive’s informational display.
2. Wireless Charging Tray on Centre Console
The centre console tray differs from the infotainment tray, as there’s a clasp for you to slide your smartphone in. Simply slide the clasp down to put your phone in, and then release it for the clasp to securely fit your device. From there, a blue LED will light up to show your phone is charging. You can also purchase them directly from the BMW website and have our parts advisors install it for you!
3. Wireless Charging Pocket Inside Centre Console
This wireless charger requires you to open your centre console and slide it into the side pocket on the driver’s side. It also has a mechanical hinge for you to adjust the size of the pocket by simply pulling it out or pushing it in to accommodate phones of different sizes. Much like the other wireless chargers, this one will also have an LED light that will illuminate to notify you that your phone is charging.
Other Questions You May Have About Your Wireless Charging Tray
How Do I Know My Phone Is Charging?
The LED light on the wireless charger will indicate the status of your smartphone charging:
- Blue light: Phone is positioned correctly and charging.
- Orange light: The charging process stopped because your device overheated, or an incompatible object is on the tray.
- Red light: Internal problems are occurring with the charger. If the problem insists, visit us at Edmonton BMW for repairs and fixes.
How To Set-Up the Charging Tray Reminder
Depending on the model of your vehicle, your BMW’s wireless charger also includes a feature that ensures you don’t forget your smartphone before leaving your vehicle—and it’s really easy to set-up!
- Go to “My Vehicle” in your BMW’s iDrive system
- Select “System settings”, then “Wireless charging tray”
- From there, make sure the “Forgotten cell phone alert” box is checked
What Phones Are Compatible With Wireless Charging?
For Apple device users, any iPhone made after (and including) the iPhone 8 has built-in wireless charging capabilities. For Android users, the results may vary, as different manufacturers have implemented the technology at different times, with the first known Android smartphone incorporating it since 2011.
For those wanting to take advantage of the technology regardless, several companies have released wireless charging adapter cases for you to add to your phone to both charge it wirelessly and protect it from physical damages. BMW manufacturers their own adapters for you to purchase, and you can also purchase third-party adapter cases from retailers like Amazon or Best Buy.
