How Does an Automatic Transmission Work?

Car maintenance is the process of inspecting, repairing, and servicing various components and systems on a vehicle. It is important to perform regular maintenance to keep your vehicle running properly and avoid costly repairs. You can do several things to maintain your car yourself, such as checking the oil level and tire pressure. Still, it is also critical to take your car to a qualified mechanic for regular servicing of an automatic transmission. If you are looking for a new or used car in the Edmonton area, we invite you to browse our inventory at Edmonton BMW. We have a wide variety of models which are regularly updated within our new inventory.

Operation of an Automatic Transmission

An automatic transmission uses a fluid coupling or torque converter to connect the engine to the gearbox. The gears are engaged and disengaged by hydraulic valves. The transmission controls the amount of fluid that flows through the torque converter, determining the amount of power transferred to the gearbox. The transmission also controls the shifting of gears, using either a gear lever or paddles located on the steering wheel. When the vehicle is put into drive, the transmission will automatically shift gears based on the speed and load of the vehicle.

Types Of Automatic Transmissions

There are two types of automatic transmissions, with the most common being a regular hydraulically operated transmission with a torque converter. It uses a combination of gears and ratios to deliver excellent fuel economy and reliability. The other transmission type is Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), which is not as common but can be found on high-performance vehicles. The AMT type utilizes a clutch, manual transmission gears, sensors, processors, actuators, and pneumatics. Vehicles equipped with AMT don't require a clutch pedal, but they provide the same engagement that manual drivers love.
