As we enjoyed a beautiful summer season with high temperatures and sunny days, it was guaranteed that it would not last. Fall came quite quickly and brought with it beautiful colours, cloudy skies, and brisk weather conditions. As Fall makes its way out, we all notice the temperature begins to drop, and the days become shorter. The time has come for snow, freezing rain and sleet to cover Canadian roads. Canada's weather is in a constant state of change; that's why being prepared for every season is important. One of the most effective ways to be prepared is switching over your winter tires when the time comes. At Edmonton BMW, we want to make sure that residents of St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Beaumont, Leduc, Spruce Grove, Devon, Stony Plain, Fort Saskatchewan and surrounding areas of Alberta are ready for the winter season. So feel free to schedule an appointment online and allow our trained service staff to take care of everything.

Winter Tire vs Seasonal Tire

There is a reason why tire manufacturers designed and engineered different tires for the various seasons. Seasonal tires are designed to perform at their best in warmer temperatures as they provide increased grip, handling, and stopping distance. While winter tires have a unique rubber compound with is able to flex in colder temperatures. They also feature different tread patterns which force snow to be pushed away and not get jammed within.

Tire change vs Tire swap

There are two ways to install winter tires on your vehicle. Firstly you can have two sets of tires and one set of wheels. Every winter season, you will need to have your winter tires installed and balanced, and when warmer weather arrives, have your winter tires removed and seasonal tires installed and balanced. The second option is to have two sets of tires and wheels. One set of wheels has your winter tires, while the other has your seasonal tires installed. A tire swap is simpler because it involves just removed one set for another and doesn't require balancing.

When to Switch Tires

The best time to switch over to winter tires is when the temperature is consistently under 7 degrees Celsius. However, winter tires should be removed when the temperature is over 7 degrees; otherwise, you will notice faster tread wear and performance.
